At St Mary’s Care Centre in Anlaby, Hull, we know that meaningful activities are essential to the wellbeing and happiness of our residents. Whether it’s a creative session, physical exercise, or simply socialising with others, these activities bring a wealth of benefits that go far beyond just passing the time. They are a key part of our holistic approach to care, contributing to both physical and mental health, and fostering a strong sense of community within our home.

Why Meaningful Activities Matter

Meaningful activities play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life for those in care. They provide not only a way to stay busy but also offer stimulation, engagement, and a sense of purpose—elements that are vital for maintaining a positive outlook and good mental health.

Physical Benefits: Regular physical activity helps improve balance, coordination, and muscle strength, which are particularly important for older adults. Engaging in physical activities can also reduce the risk of heart disease, strokes, and even dementia. At St Mary’s Care Centre, we encourage participation in activities that promote movement, from gentle exercises to more energetic group games.

Mental and Emotional Well-being: Loneliness is a significant concern for many in care homes, but meaningful activities can greatly alleviate this by fostering social connections and a sense of belonging. These activities help our residents feel valued and included, boosting their self-esteem and overall happiness.

Meet Our Activities Team

At the heart of our activities programme is our dedicated team, who are passionate about making every day special for our residents.

Marie has been with St Mary’s Care Centre for several years, bringing a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of our residents’ needs. Formerly a senior staff member, Marie transitioned into the role of Activities Coordinator, where she now focuses on creating and delivering engaging activities that cater to the diverse interests of our residents.

Millie is a newer team member, bringing fresh energy and ideas. Although this is her first role in the care sector, Millie has quickly found her stride as an Activities Coordinator. With a background in administration, she decided to move into a more hands-on role where she could make a direct impact on the lives of others. Together, Marie and Millie are the dynamic duo behind our vibrant activities calendar.

How We Create Meaningful Experiences

Marie and Millie work closely with our residents to design a variety of activities that reflect their interests and preferences. From arts and crafts sessions to musical afternoons, from gardening to group discussions, there’s something for everyone. Our goal is to ensure that each resident finds activities that they enjoy and that add value to their daily lives.

We also encourage family members to participate in our activities, helping to strengthen the bonds between residents and their loved ones. This involvement not only enhances the experience for our residents but also provides comfort and joy to their families.
