St Mary’s Riverside Care Home in Hessle is proud to announce its participation in a competition to locate St Mary’s Group Greatest Hull FC fan, sponsored by Summit Vans, this year’s key sponsor of Hull FC. This competition not only celebrates the passion and dedication of Hull FC fans but also supports the Alzheimer’s Society, Hull FC’s chosen charity for the year.

A Heartwarming Tale of Family and Rugby

Samantha (Sam), the Deputy Manager at St Mary’s Riverside Care Home, shared a touching story that showcases the deep connection between Hull FC, her family, and the care home residents.

“Working as a Deputy Home Manager can be quite stressful, often eating into my family time,” Sam explains. “My family and I are Hull FC season pass holders, and attending the games together is our much-needed family respite. Despite the weather or how the team is playing, game days are essential for us to bond.”

Sam’s commitment to Hull FC is mirrored in her home life, where one of her 14-year-old triplets plays for the Hull FC U14 girls. “Rugby is a significant part of our lives. It’s something that unites us all.”

Ken’s Unwavering Love for Hull FC

At the care home, Sam shares her passion for Hull FC with Ken, an 85-year-old resident living with dementia. Despite his memory impairment, Ken’s love for Hull FC remains a constant in his life. “Ken recalls attending games at the boulevard with his father, who was a skipper on a fishing boat. Those moments were incredibly special for him,” Sam says.

Ken’s memories of Hull FC, particularly a victorious game at Wembley, are among his most cherished. “Although Ken can’t remember all the details, the atmosphere and Hull’s win at Wembley are vivid in his mind. It’s one of the best days of his life,” Sam adds.

A Shared Joy

Ken has withdrawn from social situations due to his memory impairment, but his love for Hull FC provides a vital connection to his past and a source of joy in the present. Sam often watches games with Ken in her office, bringing them both happiness and a shared sense of community.

Supporting a Great Cause

This competition aligns perfectly with Hull FC’s support for the Alzheimer’s Society, as many residents at St Mary’s Riverside Care Home live with memory issues or dementia. By participating, the care home hopes to raise awareness and support for the charity while celebrating the profound impact Hull FC has on its fans.
