St Mary’s Chanterlands Care Home in Hull is excited to participate in a local competition sponsored by Summit Vans to find the greatest Hull FC fan. This initiative not only celebrates the unwavering passion of Hull FC fans but also supports the Alzheimer’s Society, Hull FC’s chosen charity for the year. Our heartfelt submission highlights Ralph, a resident whose love for Hull FC is deeply intertwined with the memory of his son, Craig.
Ralph’s Journey with Hull FC and His Son Craig
Ralph’s story is one of profound dedication and love. He was a devoted father to his son Craig, who lived with Muscular Dystrophy and was the biggest Hull FC fan. Despite the challenges of caring for a child with MD, Ralph ensured that Craig’s life was filled with joy and excitement, much of which came from their shared passion for Hull FC.
“Back then, the team played at the old Boulevard Stadium; it was our second home. In fact, I think Craig would have moved into the stadium if he could have,” Ralph reminisces.
Getting Craig to the matches was not always easy due to his condition, but Ralph’s determination never wavered. “I would have carried him on my back if it was the only way to get him to a game. FC was Craig’s passion, and to see his face light up at the games was enough motivation for me,” Ralph shares. “He was never happier than when FC was on the pitch.”
A Heartbreaking Loss
Craig’s battle with Muscular Dystrophy ended when he was just 19 years old, a loss that devastated Ralph and his family. “Even though we knew Craig wouldn’t live a long life, nothing prepares you for losing your child. It is the single most painful thing I have ever been through,” Ralph confides.
To honor Craig’s memory, Ralph spread his ashes at the old Boulevard Ground, a fitting tribute for someone who lived and breathed Hull FC.
A Legacy of Love and Support
Since Craig’s passing, Ralph has continued to be a fervent supporter of Hull FC. His extensive collection of FC shirts is a testament to his enduring love for the team. Ralph rarely misses a game, though he now watches them on TV.
St Mary’s Chanterlands is a vibrant community, especially on Derby day, with residents supporting both FC and Rovers. The home comes alive with friendly banter and competition, and Ralph’s cheers for Hull FC can be heard throughout the home.
“Supporting FC is a connection with my son Craig that I never wanted to lose, and so I carried on supporting and have never stopped. When I put on an FC shirt, I feel close to him,” Ralph explains.
Ralph is known in the care home for his kindness and gentle spirit. His unwavering support for Hull FC is more than just fandom; it is a way to keep Craig’s memory alive.
Why Ralph Deserves to Win
We believe Ralph embodies the true spirit of a Hull FC fan, not just in his dedication to the team but in the way his support keeps the memory of his son alive. Winning this competition would be a fitting tribute to both Ralph and Craig, celebrating their enduring love for Hull FC.
