As October arrived, conversations at St. Mary’s Chanterlands Care Home naturally turned to the much-loved Hull Fair. For many of our residents, the fair brought back fond memories of past visits. One resident, Sylvia Smith, shared that returning to the fair was something on her bucket list, and our team was determined to make it happen.

Sylvia, her friend Pat, and members of our care team, Michelle and Gavin, set off for a memorable day out. Sylvia couldn’t contain her excitement, sharing, “I never thought I’d get to go to the fair again.” Her happiness grew even more as they neared the fair, and with a beaming smile, she thanked the team: “Oh, thank you for bringing me.”

Their first stop was Walton Street, where they took their time strolling through the stalls, looking for the perfect treat. Sylvia, with a smile, selected her favourites—Cola Cubes, Mint Imperials, Pear Drops, and of course, Wright’s Brandy Snap. “That’ll do nicely,” she said, satisfied with her choices. Meanwhile, Pat picked up some large lollies for her grandchildren, knowing they’d be delighted with the treats.

The afternoon was filled with laughter and storytelling. Sylvia reminisced about riding the carousel as a child, recalling the thrill—and sometimes the fright—of watching her own boys leap from horse to horse while the ride was still moving. Pat also shared memories, recalling the excitement of the Twister and Waltzers.

One of the day’s highlights was watching the dodgem cars. Our group had a great time observing carers from another local care home who were riding the bumper cars with one of their elderly residents. The gentleman’s joy was contagious, and his sheer delight brought smiles to everyone around.

After an afternoon of exploring and enjoying the atmosphere, the group settled down for a relaxing cup of tea. As they watched people come and go, Sylvia and Pat reflected on the wonderful memories that had been stirred up by their day at the fair.

On the way back to St. Mary’s, Sylvia expressed her gratitude, saying, “You have made my dreams come true. I didn’t think I would ever see the fair again. You have made an old lady very happy.”
