We had a wonderful visit from Briony of the Marks and Spencer’s archive at Hutton Manor Care Home in Pudsey. She brought with her a suitcase full of clothes spanning from the 1940s to the 1990s and shared fascinating stories about the establishment of Marks and Spencer and the evolution of fashion over the years.

The talk captivated our residents, many of whom are Leeds born. Marks & Spencer began in 1884 when immigrant Michael Marks arrived in the north of England and secured a stall at Kirkgate Market in Leeds. Despite having little money and limited English, he built his success with the slogan “Don’t ask the price, it’s a ’Penny.” Partnering with Tom Spencer, the first Penny Bazaar stores were born, leading to the development of the well-known Marks & Spencer brand.

Following the talk, Briony invited residents and staff to feel and try on the clothes, generating much laughter and reminiscing about fashion and Leeds as it used to be. Anita, one of our residents, worked for M&S for 25 years, and a family member who attended the session still works for M&S.

This engaging and nostalgic event was a delightful experience for all, further fostering the sense of community at Hutton Manor Care Home.
