At St Mary’s Chanterlands Care Home, we pride ourselves on fostering a warm and inclusive community, and over the past few months, we’ve had the privilege of welcoming pupils from Rising Stars Academy (part of the Constellation Trust) to spend time with our residents. This wonderful collaboration has seen friendships flourish across the generations, creating truly special memories for all involved.

Creative Christmas Crafts

Last week, the pupils joined our residents for a delightful festive activity: making Christmas wreaths for their bedroom doors. With paper plates, festive images, and plenty of imagination, the group set about crafting beautiful decorations. The room buzzed with laughter and conversation as residents and pupils worked side by side, sharing ideas and stories.

A Festive Singalong

Once the wreaths were complete, it was time to strike up some music! Residents and pupils alike took turns on the microphone for a joyful singalong of Christmas favourites. The atmosphere was alive with festive cheer, with smiles lighting up every face in the room.

Hot Chocolate to Top It Off

The afternoon was rounded off with steaming mugs of hot chocolate, complete with whipped cream, adding a cosy and indulgent touch to the day.

Why Intergenerational Activities Matter

At St Mary’s Chanterlands, intergenerational activities like these are more than just enjoyable—they’re deeply beneficial. These interactions provide:

  • Opportunities for socialising: Residents and pupils alike enjoy the chance to connect with someone new.
  • Mental and physical stimulation: Activities like crafting and singing keep minds and bodies engaged.
  • Emotional support: The friendships formed help reduce feelings of isolation.
  • Personal growth: Residents gain a renewed sense of purpose, and pupils learn valuable life lessons from their older friends.
