Recently at St Mary’s Chanterlands Care Home, our residents enjoyed a delightful journey through history with the help of the Marks & Spencer Archive Box. This special resource, filled with nostalgic treasures, provided our residents with an opportunity to reminisce and share fond memories of the past.
The archive box was packed with fascinating items, including old coins, St Michael clothing from the 1950s through to the 1980s, vintage catalogues, and more. One of our residents, Charlie, was particularly captivated by the old money, sharing stories about his wages as a young man and the simple joys of spending his penny on cinema tickets or a snack.
Beryl brought some humour to the day, explaining the purpose of a girdle to our HCA, Rihanna, who had never seen one before, describing it as “old fashioned shape-wear.” Meanwhile, Ann was thrilled to recognise some of the dresses from the old Marks & Spencer catalogue, and Pat admired a 1950s sundress, commenting that she would have definitely worn it back in the day.
Our Activity Coordinators, Gavin and Michelle, along with Jayne, Linda, and Rihanna, helped make the day truly special. They encouraged residents to share their memories, try on some of the vintage clothing, and engage in lively discussions about how well things used to be made.
Charlie summed up the experience perfectly, saying, “This has been a wonderful walk down memory lane.”
