This week at St Mary’s Nursing Home in Hull, we marked VE Day with a series of splendid events that transported us back to the 1940s, a pivotal moment in our history. Our dedicated Activity Coordinators, alongside the invaluable help of our residents, turned the home into a scene straight out of the past, full of decorations and the spirit of the 1940s.
A Day to Remember
The staff donned various uniforms from the era, including service personnel and land girl outfits, bringing history to life and sparking joy and nostalgia among our residents. The home buzzed with activity as residents directed where to place decorations, sharing their vivid memories of where they were on VE Day. Tales ranged from street parties in the rain, which did not dampen spirits, to poignant recollections of serving overseas or awaiting return to their families and cities as children after years of war.
Engaging Activities and Heartfelt Reminiscences
The morning began with themed crafts, colouring, and crossword puzzles, accompanied by a special VE Day playlist. Singing along to wartime tunes, our residents and staff shared laughs and stories, strengthening the bonds within our community.
A Musical Highlight
The afternoon brought a highlight of the day: a musical performance by The Society of Mice, a favourite among our residents. Dressed in top hats and fascinators, everyone was swept up in the music, participating fully in the festivities. Our very own Angie delivered a show-stopping performance, singing beloved songs that brought everyone together in celebration.
Culinary Delights to Conclude the Celebration
To top off the day, our Chef Paula and kitchen assistant Josh prepared a wonderful buffet, featuring an array of delicious dishes that were as much a feast for the eyes as for the palate. The day concluded with full hearts and bellies, amidst smiles and stories of yesteryears.
At St Mary’s, we cherish these special days for the deep connection they foster among our residents and staff. Every event is more than just a celebration; it’s an opportunity to reflect, connect, and share the rich tapestry of our collective histories.
