At St Mary’s Riverside Care Home in Hessle, a place distinguished by its ‘Outstanding‘ CQC rating, our residents participated in a meaningful activity that resonated with everyone involved. Under the theme “Wise Words,” they shared invaluable insights gleaned from lifetimes of experiences.
The residents of St Mary’s Riverside provided a range of advice, from the practical to the profound. They emphasised the importance of minding one’s own business, caring for family through all circumstances, and maintaining personal integrity with guidance like “Mind your own business,” “Take care of your own,” and “Never be naughty, always be good.”
Their advice spanned from the importance of familial responsibilities, such as “Take care of your children through hell and high water,” to more introspective counsel like “Keep it to yourself, be kind.” They shared wisdom that was not only reflective but also injected with humour, offering unique perspectives like “Never trust a man who doesn’t polish his shoes,” and highlighting the timeless adage, “Tell the truth, shame the devil.”
These sessions revealed the depth of knowledge our residents possess, with each piece of advice serving as a testament to a life well-lived. Their words remind us of the value of listening and the wealth of wisdom our elders hold.
We at St Mary’s Riverside are privileged to share these snippets of wisdom. They remind us to cherish the lessons from the past as they illuminate the path forward.
